Gulshan Kumar – the founder of T-Series was the actual craftsman who took the Indian music industry to incredible pinnacles. Who has ever thought that an ordinary fellow aka Gulshan Kumar Dua will popularise the music in common masses to such an extent? The melodious bhajans of Gulshan Kumar came to be so widespread that it became part and parcel of the common folks’ daily life. Started with selling audio cassettes, Gulshan Kumar made the access of common man to music, easy and inexpensive. And after touching new heights in music industry, his company T-Series also got involved in producing films and introduced some new faces to Bollywood industry, who later on became successful celebs.
Let’s have a quick look of the journey of Gulshan Kumar along with T-Series.
Gulshan Kumar was born in a Punjabi family in the capital city, Delhi. His father was a fruit juice seller. Gulshan started to support his family from an early age of 23 by selling records and low-cost audio cassettes. After making some profits with it, he started to produce cassettes on his own.
Laying the bricks of his music business
Gulshan Kumar began a music production company namely ‘Super Cassettes Industries’ in Noida. This business venture turned out to be successful, as leaving the poor quality audio tapes behind, he started selling good quality tapes in a reasonable price. After topping the music business, he moved to Bombay and presented religious music cassettes at a very low cost. In addition to it several mythological soaps and movies were also produced by him and they gained much admiration by the audiences.
The first Bollywood film produced by Gulshan Kumar was ‘Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka’ in 1989. This romantic movie with even more romantic melody became a great hit in the Bollywood industry. Next, came his blockbuster movie ‘Ashiqui’ in 1990. The movie was a super hit and it was greatly accredited to its songs which are popular even today.
His role in Bollywood industry
Apart from ruling the realm of the music industry, Gulshan Kumar gave many new talents a chance in the film industry. There is a long list of the names of singers, he launched in the world of melody including Sonu Nigam, Anuradha Paudwal, Vandana Bajpai, Kumar Sanu and many more such gems.
After the huge success of his established company, Super Cassettes Industries Limited, Gulshan Kumar set up T-Series music tag under the same company. To the current time T-Series is the top brand in the Indian music business and owns 60% shares of it. It successfully runs the business of publishing original songs of films, remixes, bhajans, trendy soundtracks, hit pop music of 90s etc.
The sad demise of Gulshan Kumar
Gulshan was shot dead outside a temple in Andheri, Mumbai on August 12, at an age of 41. Police suspected music director Nadeem for planning the murder. However, on January 9, 2001, Vinod Jagtap aka Raja confessed being the contract killer.
After death of Gulshan Kumar, his brother Krishan Kumar and son Bhushan Kumar took charge of T-Series. His daughter, Tulsi Kumar is a well-known playback singer and has lent her voice to many popular songs of Bollywood movies.
