The “Picasso of India”, Maqbool Fida Husain was more than just a charismatic artist! He was an innocent illustrator who fell deeply in love with the shimmering beauty of Bollywood. His visions saw metaphor in cinema, and his budding romance with Bollywood never seemed to end.
From painting cinema hoardings to directing a captivating motion film called Gaja Gamini (2000), M. F. Husain saw life into the beauty of certain actresses, which was highly expressive through his paint strokes and imaginative sculptures. Let’s read what these timeless Bollywood beauties or famously called M.F’s Muses have to say about the legendary painter:
- Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Husain’s First Cinematic Love!
His love aka obsession for Madhuri made him cast her into his first Bollywood venture Gaja Gamini (2000) alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Why Madhuri was smitten by MF, here is the reason:
“I loved his young-at-heart attitude. We shared a very close relationship and I admired his work. His paintings of me were a huge compliment and I often joked that I was embarrassed by his constant praise.
Husain saab was very shy in complimenting me directly. He would cleverly disguise it in the form of praising my expressions and moments from my films. He must have given me more thousand compliments but the most glowing one is where he called me the `complete woman.”
- Amrita Rao and Her “Essence Of An Indian Woman”!
Amrita Rao’s ageless portrayal of an Indian woman in Vivah took M. F. Husain by storm. Besotted with her timeless beauty, this is how Amrita remembers him,
“The last we met, he escorted me till Dubai airport as I prepared to return, and said, ‘I can only drop you till here.’ Coming back to India was his dream unfulfilled.
He was the most energetic person I ever interacted with and didn’t let age give him an excuse not to do something. His enthusiasm rubbed off on me.”
- Tabu and her “Comforting Simplicity” which attracted Husain!
Casted in Meenaxi (2004) opposite Kunal Kapoor, Tabu confessed how collaborating wirth the evergreen legend directed her soul into a whole new world.
“I am deeply pained to hear of his death. May God grant him peace and a wonderful journey ahead! Every frame of that film is like a portrait in itself. I saw life in a colourful manner through his eyes.
I loved working with Husain saab. His unique presentation of colour palates on a film canvas was just magical.”
- Anushka Sharma and her “Bubbly” Magic!
Being a newcomer and being praised by the maestro himself, Anushka Sharma aka “Punjab ki Kudi” was witnessed by M.F. Husain in her very first movie “Band Baaja Baraat”, which he saw 8 times!
“Since I was a newcomer, being complimented by Husain saab was huge for me. I deeply regret his death and the fact that his last wish to be in India remains unfulfilled.
I hope we are more tolerant towards our artists and don’t make their work a political game.”
- Vidya Balan and Husaain’s love for her Authentic Beauty!
We really don’t blame him for falling in love with Vidya Balan “Ishqiya”! Who wouldn’t! Husain actually watched the movie 12 times while being engrossed with Vidya! He actually wanted to paint her, for which Vidya happily agreed as per the rumors!! Here how Husain described her:
“She’s gorgeous and blessed with an earthiness, which enchants you. She has certain unique characteristics, which suit the main protagonist in my new film Comedy.com. I have already started working on the script.
For me it’s all about vision and the image. So, the entire storyboard will first be painted with a series of paintings done on Vidya, before we start filming her. In fact, I’m waiting to paint her! I spoke to her last week and now I’m looking forward to meeting her.”
