Somewhere deep down, there is a little Mowgli hidden inside of our imagination, who just wants to be free and wild!
Who doesn’t love hearing old tales and classics? But representing them on an enormous screen with 3D VFX effects and high-class animation takes the viewers to cloud eleven! Yes, we are talking about the new and the biggest release of 2016 so far, The Jungle Book! Jon Favreau returns to the big screen as a director after Iron Man 3, and SMASHED IT all over!
The movie adapted several facts and storylines from Rudyard Kipling’s timeless tale. An abandoned ‘man-cub’ was found by Bagheera, who fetched him to a pack of wolves led by Akela. Mother wolf Raksha took charge of him, and nurtures him up along with her other cubs, naming him Mowgli.
After some years when Shere Khan comes back to the jungle, he threatens the pack to abandon Mowgli otherwise he will attack him. In order to save his mother from the gruesome nature of Shere Khan, Mowgli sets on a journey of survival and self-discovery, under the guidance of Bagheera and Baloo. During his way to human village, he meets several creatures with least good intentions, and understands the true nature of life.
With Neel Sethi, the only single living character, Jon made a whole compilation of animated characters, and threaded them together with emotions, special effects and real-time acting! The movie comprises of some of the biggest names in both Hollywood and Bollywood, and has left an intriguing impact on the audience with their voice spells.
It comes naturally or is it Jon Favreau’s training that the voices and connections between characters even in an animated movie are so strong! Be it the cunningness in Shere Khan aka Idris Elba’s voice, protectiveness in Bagheera aka Ben Kingsley’s voice, sensuality in Kaa aka Scarlett Johansson’s voice, stubbornness in King Louie aka Christopher Walken’s voice, or the laid-back attitude in Baloo aka Bill Murrey’s voice- Everything is perfectly tucked in! The Hindi version has some of the experienced and strongest stars as the cast, with our very own Desi girl Priyanka Chopra lending her sultry voice for Ka the Python, Om Puri’s disciplined voice for Bagheera, Nana Patekar’s cynical voice for Shere Khan and Irrfan Khan’s happy-go-lucky voice for Baloo.
The movie has jungle breathing to life and animals emoting every feeling through their gestures. The technical wizardry is outstanding, and makes the audience feel so real and natural, that for once you will forget you exist in a civilized environment. The director has managed to create a fearsome yet homely ambiance. From bright, green, happy environment to dark, misty horror, the movie made through all the barriers and made the audience walk with every scene.
If you lived through 90’s in India and was a big Fan of Doordarshan’s The Jungle Book series, here is a video to reshuffle your memories with this quirky yet innocent anthem gifted by Disney…
Now, the “living” star of the whole show- Neel Sethi, our Mowgli! The Indian American boy set a natural presence amongst the movie, and highlights a sense of rushing energy, love, anger and bravery with every scene.
Elba swipes an air of hatred and menace before even entering the screen, enjoying Khan’s cruelty and dark humor to its very extent. Ben Kingsley’s Bagheera comes out as the fatherly shield for Mowgli, and interprets the care and love in a disciplined manner.
But here comes our very own winner- Bill Murray’s Baloo!! Laid back, all-time slacker and comical! He came as a breath of fresh air, and revived every sense of comedy with his cute gestures and awesome attitude. The relationship between Baloo and Mowgli has a heart, and Jon allows the viewers to feel and bond! Singing the classic Bare Necessities together was the cherry on the cake!
