1960’s and 70’s saw Dharmendra as the rising star and becoming an integral part of Bollywood. His dashing personality, looks to kill for and marvelous talent were his own spokesperson. But apart from being a sexy actor, he was a known Casanova, a lover-boy of tinkle-town, if we should say!
His much-talked affair with none other than our very own ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini garnered major attention. He even converted to Islam just to marry the beauty!! Indeed a perfect couple, but one wrong turn was the fact that Dharmendra was already MARRIED TO HIS FIRST WIFE Prakash Kaur, and had two cute kids with her.
This aspect of Veeru’s life is a lil unexplored! Witnessing success and becoming a popular star marked a new era and beginning for Deol family. But the same laid the foundation of anger and hardship for none other than the wife, Prakash Kaur Deol itself! Handling female fans, affair rumors, and gossips would have been difficult for a simple woman, but Prakash supported her husband to back and moon, until that one incident happened!
We all know that a much-married Dharmendra met Hema Malini on the sets of Sholay and fell head-over-heels in love with the Dream Girl. After an affair of five years, they both got married in 1980, despite Dharmendra being already married! He converted to Islam just to wed Hema!
Now, a stark difference between Prakash and Hema’s lifestyle! But being a true and devoted wife, she still defended him, which shocked the whole nation. She opened up in an interview, and said:
“Why only my husband, any man would have preferred Hema to me. How dare anyone call my husband a womanizer when half the industry is doing the same thing? All heroes are having affairs and getting married a second time”.
Moreover, she even went on to say that it wasn’t Hema’s fault either, but she had sympathy for her:
”I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives and her friends. But if I were in Hema’s place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother I do not approve of them.”
Interestingly, Prakash revealed that she still respects her husband, and will always love him. He is and will be the only man in her life.
”He is the first and last man in my life. He is the father of my children. I love and respect him a lot. What has happened has happened. I don’t know whether I should blame him or destiny for it. But one thing is for certain however; far he may be from me and whatever might happen. If I need him I know he’ll be there. I have not lost my trust in him. After all, he is the father of my children.”
She even says that he is a good father, and protects them from every concern!
“Why should I protect myself when I have my husband to protect me. I don’t care what the world may say about the type of relationship I share with my husband. Where I am concerned, I know my husband is protecting us .He comes home every day and spends time with the children. I don’t say he comes home for me but he does come home.”
What a faith! Dharmendra made it a point to spend time with his kids, and never allowed his relationship with Hema to come in between. Helping the kids with their career and lives is what Prakash admires about him, and calls him a “Perfect Dad”.
“He may not be the best husband, though he is very good to me, but he certainly the best father. His children love him a lot. He never neglects them. He is even launching Ajay’s career. Everyone thought I had struck a deal with my husband that he could marry Hema if he launched my son’s career. But that is not true. How can such a thing be possible? Isn’t Sunny as much his son as mine?“
She even revealed that she never turned her back from the responsibilities, and knew her limitations. She remained aware of her priorities, and gave her kids an excellent upbringing. That’s the reason Sunny and Bobby hold her in high regard.
“I may not be very educated nor I am very pretty but, in the eyes of my children I am the best woman on earth. Similarly, my children are to me the best bachche in the world. I know my children very well since I have brought them up. And I can say with confidence that none of my children will hurt anyone.”
Concluding, Prakash certainly is a woman to be respected, despite being cheated. She is a woman of substance, who never allowed the presence of “other woman” affect her priorities and devotion to Dharmendra.
