The first three months of 2018 is a roller coaster ride for Bollywood. It has the perfect masala of a super hit movie like a gorgeous rise of a movie amidst controversy, unexpected success from the underdog and unanticipated failure of ace direction. It has been a great year for all the movie goers and expected to continue the flow all through the year. From the different taste of movies, it seems that Bollywood is growing and the directors are pushing their boundaries by experimenting different genre of cinemas. There were period drama like Padmaavat, social cause film like Padman, quirky comedy like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, horror movie like Pari and action packed movie like Baaghi. Here Bollywood Googly presents its own report card for box office for the first quarter of the year 2018.
Googly Flop Show: Aiyaary
You can bet on any movie directed by ace director Niraj Pandey who has movies like A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby, M.S Dhoni in his kitty. But sadly, the latest venture, Aiyaary is utterly disappointing. Efficient actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Sidharth Malhotra, Kumud Mishra, Naseeruddin Shah could not save the ship. Total mess storyline along with numerous subplots and flashbacks, Aiyaary was the biggest disappointment of the year till now grossing only 16.50 crore all over India. It had a tough fight with Kaalakaandi and Dil Juunglee for the position.
Googly Unpredictable: Baaghi 2
This mindless action movie though has not gotten much positive review from the critics, but it came out as the winner in the box office from its very first day. Baaghi 2 has created a record as the highest box office opener by grossing whopping Rs 25.10 crore. This Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani starrer movie managed to collect Rs 73.10 crore in the first weekend emerging as a surprise winner in the first quarter.
Googly Messenger: Hichki
In India, not many people were aware of Tourette Syndrome before the movie Hichki. Rani Mukherjee brings freshness in content as well as in acting while portraying the role of Naina Mathur, a victim of the rare disease. This Yash Raj Production has collected Rs 35.82 crore and is still maintaining a good run at the box office.
Googly Social Worker: Padman
In India, where menstruation is a taboo, R. Balki makes a ground breaking movie dealing with this restricted subject. Padman is a great movie not only for its exceptional content, but also for the stellar performances of Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor. The movie has earned Rs 40.05 crore on its first weekend and minted Rs 64.97 crore till now.
Googly Real To Reel: Raid
When comes to acting, Ajay Devgn has become the craftsman of the industry. He can mould himself in any role as per the requirement of the script. In Raid, he has proved this again. The movie is based on the true event of longest IT raid of India on the backdrop of Lucknow. The onscreen clashes of Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla are spectacular. The movie is about to enter 100 crore club by grossing Rs 94.19 crore so far.
Googly Chiller: Pari
Horror is a generally a dodged subject in Bollywood where any A-grade actor rarely involves into. But Anushka Sharma has broken the rule with Pari, which can be called a forerunner for this genre. The powerful performance of Anushka Sharma was degraded by the messy story line. The movie managed to collect only Rs 23.92 crore at the box office as the audiences were not that appreciated.
Googly Laughing Club: Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety
This movie has an unexpected opening and appreciation both for the audiences and critics. Luv Ranjan’s tried and tested formula of ‘helpless man in love with a wicked woman’ has proved the super success. This small budget romantic comedy has managed to collect Rs 107 crore which comes as the surprise package for both the directors and actors.
Googly King Of The Show: Padmaavat
The magic of Sanjay Leela Bhansali has proved that no one else can handle a magnum opus like him. Padmaavat faced protests and turmoil of Karni Sena all over the country and the release date was much delayed. But the movie has emerged as the winner both in the box office and the hearts of the audiences. It is the first movie of 2018 that has entered in to the 300 crore club.
